open source for america
"with the proliferation of issues and a scarcity of resources to address them all, leaders inside and outside government are turning to the principles of participation, collaboration, transparency, and efficiency to address the challenges facing our country and the world." - Tim O'Reilly

So I'll follow suit and introduce myself as well. I first found out about Open Source for America at a Birds-of-a-Feather session at the Red Hat Summit in Chicago. Their goal struck a particularly strong chord with me, since many years ago I had a role helping to convince the Federal Government to require that all computers they purchased could run UNIX (well, a POSIX compliant OS, anyway). I've been working with UNIX and more recently Linux for over 25 years. I'm a strong supporter of Open Source software, having contributed bits of code, bug fixes, documentation, and debugging efforts to 4.2BSD, GNU, and countless other open source projects over the years. I've worked (directly or indirectly) for some of America's largest companies (including EDS/GM, Ford, NYNEX, and Fedex) and also some of it's smallest (including Reiber Labs). I co-founded Open Country, a now-defunct startup which was initially focused on making Linux easier to use for everyday people, and later refocused on systems management tools for Linux. Before moving from CA to TX, I was on the Ubuntu CA LOCO and active in a number of Silicon Valley technology-centric groups. I've signed up on this Education working group because that's what I do now; I'm a Linux Trainer at Rackspace Hosting. I look forward to helping out Open Source for America however I can.
