From: Open Source for America Steering Committee

Many of you have expressed interest in different levels of OSA
involvement. Those of you who wish to be active should
be, especially as regards: advising both the
Steering Committee and the Working Groups, talking to the media,
talking with U.S. government officials, and appearing in behalf of the
coalition at conferences. We're working on a light but effective
means
for collaboration with you, and that will start to become available
momentarily. In this regard, a Board member has offered to
host dinner on September 9th, in Washington DC, for the Board and
Steering Committee members who can make it (some of you will be in
town
for the O'Reilly Gov 2.0 Summit). Details to come in a follow-up
email -- stay tuned.

As an update, the launch on July 22 went very well. To view the media
coverage, see:

Our
thanks to those of you who helped with the media and/or with the
Podcasts. The membership has already swelled from the approximately
70
founding members to more than 1,200.

The next step is to now
organize this new, large community. As some of you already know,
we are setting up working groups for specific technology areas. We
have set up the website on a
wiki and with a "members only" section, and expect to soon begin
leveraging the site for open collaboration among the members of these
working groups.
We have pre-registered you but you will need to reset your passwords,
do that by clicking here: <a
In some cases, these working groups align with the Obama
Administration's priorities. In other cases, we have already identified
strong advocates for a particular issue. We'll no doubt be adding and
changing groups based on their performance and support over time. At
the moment, we've recognized the following areas:

1. Healthcare
2. Energy and Transportation
3. Education
4. Military
5. Acquisitions & Competition
6. State and Local
7. CyberSecurity
8. Transparency
9. Voting and Elections Technology
10. Geospatial Technology
11. Marketing & Public Relations

If any of you have particular interest in
any of these working groups and you would like to provide
advise or leadership, please reply to Tom Rabon and Chris Hankin, their
email addresses are included on this email thread.

Best regards,
Open Source for America Steering Committee
