How to Edit Open Source for America Pages

The Open Source for America website is a wiki running on Apache Open For Business (OFBiz).  Not all of the content is completely editable, but members who log in can edit the content on the workgroup pages and some other pages of OFSA. Workgroup chairs are expected to perform some basic housekeeping on their pages, which means that they can and will delete any material you post that they find objectionable.  Although we welcome members to edit, any posted content must comply with Open Source for America’s Terms of Use and Privacy Policy.  Below is a basic tutorial of how to edit the wiki.

Step 1. Click the “Log In” link located in the top left corner of any OSFA page.

Step 2. Enter your username (email address) and password & click “Login.”

Step 3. Go to the page you wish to edit.  Working group pages are listed under “Get Involved.” If you have permission to edit a page, you will see on the top left corner, “Edit: Activate.”  Click on that to begin.

Step 4.  Notice that the editable portions of the page are surrounded by dotted lines.  Please be very, very careful about editing the menu.  If you are not fully comfortable with wikis, you should NOT edit the menu.  Instead, ask support@opensourceforamerica.com for help.  The dotted line surrounding the main text of the page will be red.  Double click inside that section to edit.

Step 5.  This will open the wiki editor (be patient, the editor is sometimes slow to open).  Generally, the editor operates in rich text.  If you prefer to edit in HTML, notice the HTML button in the middle right. You may enter the text or material you want to enter in the white space.

EDITING TOOLS:  Below is a short description about each button on the editing palette.  More help is available by clicking the “Help” button in the wiki editor window.

Step 4. When you finish editing, be sure to click on  to save your changes, or the  if you wish to cancel without saving. Then, click on “Edit Deactivate” to prevent opening the editing tool by mistake.

Step 5.  Remember to log out so that no one posts material in your name.  For a flash video tutorial of wiki editing with OFBiz, visit http://brainfood.com/#/Webslinger/EditingMenus
