Open source has become more attractive to education administrators who must serve increasing student populations on shrinking budgets. However, practical successes need to be measured and documented for formal decision-makers in the education sector. Issues that need to be addressed include both the acquisition cost benefit of OSS, the support, maintenance costs, and of course, the training needed for teachers, students, and other stakeholders in the system. If one-to-one computing is the objective, OSS stands ready to get us there.
